BIRTH DEBRIEF

Sometimes, after you've given birth it's not clear what happened or why. We can explore your experience together, and you can have the time and space to talk about how you've been feeling since your birth.

Perhaps everything happened so quickly that you didn't have time to take it all in. Perhaps your labour ended with an emergency that you don't feel you fully understand.

A birth debrief gives us the opportunity to explore your experience together, both clinically and emotionally.

With over 16 years of midwifery experience, I can help you understand the care you received, explain medical terminology and talk through why certain interventions or decisions may have been recommended.

Just as importantly, there's time to talk about how you've been feeling since your birth, honestly and without fear of judgment. I want you to leave feeling heard, and supported.

You don't need to have had a traumatic birth to book a debrief, and you don't need to arrive with a list of questions. Sometimes you just want to understand what happened, and that's a perfectly good place to start.

What Can We Talk About?

In short, whatever you want.

Every birth is different, so there's no set agenda. Depending on what you'd like to explore, we can:

  • Go through your birth experience, piecing together the sequence of events and anything you remember being unclear or confusing.

  • Explore clinical decisions and interventions, including why certain procedures may have been recommended.

  • Look through your birth notes, and translate the medical jargon into something that actually makes sense.

  • Talk about how you've been feeling, including a basic mental health assessment if appropriate, particularly if aspects of your experience have been difficult to process or continue to trouble you.

  • Identify any unanswered questions, including things you might want to discuss further with your maternity team or might be something you want to address before another pregnancy. I can also help you draft emails if you'd like to raise concerns, ask questions or provide feedback about your care.

  • Explore additional support, including signposting you to relevant services or making referrals on your behalf, with your agreement, where appropriate.

  • Provide a written summary of our discussion, including the key points we've explored and any recommendations or next steps we've agreed on.
